Exported contacts are stored in VCard format. In general, all contacts from the address book are stored in the file contacts.db (or contacts2.db) at data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/, but it is extremely difficult to restore them, since the file is contained in the internal memory of the phone, A good programs to scan internal Android memory(except for the Undeleter utility), essentially no.

Modern mobile devices cope quite well with the role of multifunctional devices, providing their users with the basic capabilities of computers, cameras, video cameras, players, radios, e-books and even remote controls remote control. But despite the rather impressive list of positive qualities, this category of technology also has weaknesses associated with both software and hardware components.

Unfortunately, not all smartphone users, including Samsung, are aware that they are not immune to device malfunctions. They are only prompted to think in this direction by unforeseen problems that arise in the operation of gadgets. For example, the sudden disappearance of all files from the internal and external storage devices of devices. This article indicates possible options the occurrence of this failure and methods for recovering lost files, including photos.

Reasons for deleting photos

  • Update failed software. Manufacturers of mobile devices assure that upon completion of installation new version firmware “over the air”, access to all user files is restored. However, in practice, the situation can get out of control and, as a result, the process of deploying a software update leads to the loss of several gigabytes of valuable data.
  • There is not enough space on the device's internal storage. Files may gradually disappear if the device’s built-in memory runs out of free megabytes, which are so necessary for stable operation of the system. In this case, the OS eliminates digital records to free up space for its needs. Of course, the specialists responsible for the software try to prevent this from happening, but, unfortunately, the problem periodically occurs on some devices.
  • Incorrect operation of cleaning programs. The application store is full of programs that provide “services” for cleaning the device’s memory of various garbage. Unfortunately, not all of them can distinguish temporary files or the remaining “junk” of long-deleted software from user data that has simply been on the smartphone for a long time. Therefore, in addition to garbage, when clearing memory, “cleaners” quietly delete important digital records, including photographs.
  • Damage or complete failure of the memory card. Photos that are stored on a memory card, oddly enough, can also be lost. This can happen due to failures in the logical component of the drive (for example, if the integrity of file system), or due to partial or complete damage to the hardware (for example, a failure or memory wear).

How to recover photos on Samsung phone

If photos disappear due to a software glitch, there is a chance to restore them at home. But if earlier this was done with minimal costs effort and time, now to return the files you need to dance with a tambourine. Initially, almost all Android devices were recognized as USB drives. Data that was deleted from their internal storage was restored with simple and free solutions that support work with USB Mass Storage. Now all devices with a “green robot” on board work using the MTP protocol. For them, the methods that worked before are no longer suitable. In this case, it is necessary to use heavy artillery in the form of USB debugging, root rights and special software that can work with the memory of Android devices.

It happens that for some reason SMS messages disappear from your smartphone. Find out how you can restore them in our next material:

Preparing the device

To “make friends” of a Samsung device with a file recovery program, you need to do the following preparatory work:

  • Getting root rights is a must. Without them, the program will not be able to contact all sectors of the device’s memory and return data. The methods for obtaining special privileges are unique for each Samsung device, so you must go through this preparation stage yourself.
  • Enable developer mode and USB debugging. This must be done so that the program can connect to the phone and perform the operation to return files.

Enable Developer Mode and USB Debugging

  1. On your phone, launch the Settings app.

To launch the Settings application, you can use the icon on the desktop or the button in the notification shade

  2. Go to the "About device" section.

You can find the “About Device” section at the very bottom of the “Settings” application.

  3. Find the line “Build number” and quickly click on it 5 times to activate developer mode. A notification that this mode has been successfully enabled should appear at the bottom of your device’s screen.

To successfully activate developer mode, you need to quickly click on the “Build number” field

  4. In Settings, find the new “Developer Options” section and go to it.

If Developer Options doesn't appear in the list, try restarting the Settings app

  5. In it, find the “USB Debugging” option and activate it by checking the box.

One tap is enough to activate “USB Debugging”

Recovering images using a computer

On the Internet you can come across a fairly large selection of programs that can solve problems with deleted files. Some are distributed free of charge, but have a limited set of features. Others provide a wide range of features, but you need to pay the developers to access them. The first category includes programs such as 7-Data Android Recovery, Remo Recover for Android, Tipard Android Data Recovery and Wondershare Dr.Fone for Android. When writing this instruction we used latest program from the given list. You can also use other solutions, since they all have a similar set of functions, simple interface and tips.

  1. Download, install and run a program on your computer that will help you recover lost files.
  2. Connect your Samsung phone with USB debugging to the computer using a working USB cable.
  3. After detecting your device, the program will tell you what further manipulations you need to perform to get the files back. In the case of Dr.Fone for Android, click on the “Data Recovery” button and give your consent to connect the program to your mobile device. A corresponding request window should appear on the screen of your Samsung device.

Click on the “Yes” button to allow pairing with your phone

  4. Check the categories of data that need to be restored and proceed to the next step.

To restore photos you need to select the “Gallery” category

  5. Provide all installed program components at the stage of obtaining information about the device or while scanning its memory.
  6. After completing the search for all files, in the program window, go to the “Gallery” folder. In it you will see all those deleted files that the utility managed to find. Select the ones you need and restore them with the corresponding button.

Please note that memory cells tend to be overwritten by other data. Therefore, it is advisable to do the recovery without delay, before new files are recorded on the phone. If this has already happened, then be prepared for the fact that after scanning the memory with the utility, you will not find the necessary photos. Unfortunately, an unsatisfactory result may await you even if the device was flashed or its settings were reset. In both options, memory is re-allocated, which significantly reduces the chances of successfully returning lost data.

Recovery without PC

You can try to recover missing photos without using a computer. To do this not an easy task rescue apps found on Google are suitable Play Market. True, as in the case of utilities on a PC, to effectively use tools from the store Android systems You must have root rights on your device.

To recover photos on your mobile device, you can use the GT Recovery program. It works with almost all gadgets with Android OS on board. You can still find it in the same app store. It is distributed free of charge and has two versions. The first requires root rights to work with memory, while the second can function on a smartphone without them. We still recommend using the version that requires rooting, as with it you will have a better chance of recovering your data.

  1. Install the application and launch it on your phone.

In addition to photos, GT Recovery can recover other types of data

  2. Proceed to photo recovery by clicking on the corresponding button on the main screen.

I will answer your questions: why are the photos not displayed in the Android gallery (the phone does not show the photo) or the photos are opened in low quality. What should I do if the images are not saved in the Gallery? The answers are posted below.

3 programs that will recover photos from Android Gallery

Among photo recovery programs, we note three free tools: DiskDigger, Recuva, PhotoRec.

These programs will be useful if photos from the Gallery were deleted, damaged or disappeared as a result of unsuccessful file copying:

  • from the phone's internal memory to an SD card;
  • from phone to computer.

We recommend testing the above programs with the deep scan option. The programs are installed on the PC. Gallery photos should be saved to hard drive, not an SD card, otherwise deleted files will be overwritten and the chances of recovery will be significantly reduced.

Change where you store your photos

Many users install Android on their phone. new map memory and are surprised to discover that the photos and videos taken are still saved to the phone’s memory.

You can easily change where you store your photos. To do this:

  • Go to Camera Settings
  • Find the Storage Location option
  • Change it to an SD card.

Free your memory card from unnecessary files

If the photos taken are saved not to the memory card, but to the phone (although the SD card is indicated in the settings), most likely, there is simply not enough space on the memory card and Android is using the phone’s memory as a spare.

To correct the situation, check the free disk space: Settings - Optimization - Memory.

If necessary, remove unnecessary files on the phone. You can do this:

  • through the Optimization section
  • using CCleaner, CleanMaster utilities for Android
  • manually, through any file manager.

Format the memory card and check it for read errors

Another known issue is that photos are displayed incorrectly / periodically disappear from the Gallery. The reason is reading errors on the memory card.

Solving the problem is quite simple:

  1. Format the memory card
  2. You can check the disk for errors using the chkdsk utility.

Where are the Gallery photos stored?

Remember the name of the folder - DCIM (Digital Camera IMages).

All photos taken with the camera are stored in the Camera directory on the memory card or phone. For ease of organization, you can create other folders within DCIM.

Note. There should be no files named nomedia in DCIM (and subfolders) (this is a signal for the media scanner to ignore its contents).

If Android Gallery does not display photos, check the contents of the DCIM folder via PC:

  • connecting the phone to the computer via a USB cable
  • by connecting an SD card via a card reader.

If the photos are found, copy them to your PC; if not, use recovery programs.

Clear the Gallery cache

If the Gallery displays gray or black squares instead of thumbnails, clear the cache. Before performing this step, we recommend that you back up the files from DCIM to your hard drive.

The main reasons for deleting photos from the Gallery

1. Formatting a memory card

Users often forget that formatting a memory card often deletes all files stored on the SD card, including write-protected photos and print orders. Such multimedia data can only be recovered using special deleted photo recovery software.

2. Overwriting and deleting photos

A very common mistake is accidentally overwriting images or photos stored on the camera’s memory card with other data. In fact, it is very easy to overwrite a photo by mistake. Therefore, we advise you to check the correct steps several times when you record photos to your computer or device's memory card.

3. Damage or breakage of the camera's SD card

If the memory card is not stored securely, hard drive or flash drives, any storage media, they are at great risk of physical damage if accidentally dropped or directly impacted. We strongly advise you to store your cameras, SD cards, and flash drives wrapped in thick and soft material that will protect them - and, accordingly, your photographs - from shock under any conditions.

Photos disappeared from the SD memory card, from separate folders, and the folder itself was renamed to this: կ_ _ _ _ _~2. What to do?

Answer. Deletion and renaming could occur either as a result of a virus or after an application error. Since the pictures have been deleted, it would be a good idea to restore them. The CardRecovery program is suitable for this: the toolkit supports memory cards, and you can specify photographs and images as file types.

After recovery, you can rename the folder manually.

The photos from the Gallery may have been damaged. You can take out an SD card and connect it to your PC via a card reader. Then using Recuva programs scan the memory card - perhaps the photos will be restored.

Recovering photos from a gallery stored in the internal memory of Android is much more difficult: you need solid experience. I described how to do this. If you don’t have the necessary skills, it’s better not to try.

1. In the gallery, all my photographs for the whole year became one date. This happened after I moved the photo to the SD card. Help me restore the shooting date!

2. I lost all the photos I took through my phone. Restoring them is not a problem, the problem is finding out the date the photo was taken. After all, when I restored them, the properties show the date when I revived them. How can I find out the original date of a photo?

Answer. The date the photo was taken is stored in the exif properties of the file. Install any image viewer (for example, XnView) and go to the image properties. In the EXIF tab you can easily find out the date of the photo, down to the second. The shooting information looks like this:

Date taken<Дата съемки>: 2011:08:01 06:37:17
Date digitized<Дата оцифровки>: 2011:08:01 06:37:17

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9500. The problem is this. I go to the Android Gallery, in photos or pictures or in the bluetooth folder, click on the photo - it opens, but I can’t enlarge it. And so with any file. Everything was fine before. What to do? I mean I increased or decreased with my fingers.

Answer. You may have moved the photos to another location or deleted them. Instead, there were sketches. There may be a problem with the Android gallery or other applications. Updating the firmware may solve the problem.

The Digma HIT 4G tablet erases photos from the gallery (the photo is in the tablet’s memory). The applications remain, but the Android gallery does not show photos. The memory is not shown in the file manager. If I take new photos, they do not appear in the gallery. There's also a problem with screenshots. The device writes “cannot take a screenshot, insufficient memory or lack of permission from the application or organization.” I reset the settings. Everything starts working, the photographed images are displayed again, but after a while they disappear from the Gallery again. Tell me what to do if photos from the gallery are missing?

Answer. Photos are not saved to the internal memory because there is not enough memory on the phone. You need to delete unnecessary files, transfer applications to a memory card, if possible. It is for this reason that the pictures have been deleted from the Gallery and are not saved to the internal memory.

1. I accidentally deleted the “Camera” folder from the Gallery instead of a bad photo. As a result, all files were deleted, the phone does not show photos in the gallery. It is not possible to restore them; only those photos that were deleted one by one are restored.

2. I have a Galaxy A3 2016 phone. Several times already the “Camera” folder has disappeared from the phone’s memory from the Gallery. I lost a lot of important photos: (I downloaded several programs for recovery, but the ones that were deleted themselves do not appear. Please help me get the photos back!

Answer. If you save files to their original location, you reduce the chances of recovery. Since all the photos were deleted at different times, each of them has different storage conditions (the files may have been overwritten by others). If you used a memory card for storage, try recovering photos from the Gallery using CardRecovery. If the files were stored in the phone’s built-in memory, DiskDigger will help. You need to specify the DCIM folder to scan.

1. After I take a photo or record a video on my phone, everything is saved on a micro SD. I go to the Android Gallery - and there are just black pictures hanging there. Why does this happen, can they be restored?

2. The problem is of the following nature. On different Android versions(6 or 7), when I take pictures and set the path to the internal memory of the phone, the pictures remain without problems, but if the saving path is changed to SD card, then after a day or two, going through the gallery, the pictures are not visible, only empty icons of an unsupported format, the most no photo. If you view through a standard file manager, there is no photo in the DCIM folder either. Where does the photo go?

Answer. It is necessary to free up the internal memory of the device, since the system does not have enough space to record photos in the Gallery - accordingly, they are copied to the memory card. You can do this manually, using the CCleaner utility for Android or, for example, the Storage Analyzer application.

Samsung phone A3. Today I wanted to delete videos from the Gallery, I selected the ones I needed, clicked the “Delete” button and the phone froze, then clicked “Exit”. As a result, photos are not displayed in the gallery on Android. I rebooted the phone, but nothing changed, still no photos. Is it possible to somehow restore the photos and videos that were in the Gallery?!

Answer. If files have disappeared as a result of a system failure, it is worth checking the memory card for errors. If you synced your Gallery with Google service Photo, look for a copy of the files there.

If the Gallery photos were stored in the internal memory of Android, the task becomes more complicated. (Read our guide to recovering from internal memory.)

Answer. Among specialized programs, we recommend PhotoRec. The program recognizes many graphic formats (including png, jpg) and can search by signatures. In this case, there is a high probability that PhotoRec will restore the photo as is - with damage, without a title or date. Also try to recover photos using DiskDigger (Windows version), some of the photos can be found thanks to the Dig Deeper function.

Deleted files from a smartphone or tablet cannot be returned using the gadget’s built-in functions. For these purposes there are special programs, but they do not guarantee 100% success, although the chances are quite high.

In this article, we will consider the question: how to recover photos on Android after deletion and provide links to programs that will best cope with this task.

Why is the data not permanently deleted?

All information storage devices operate on the same principle. When you delete any information on a device, only the file entry disappears from the file table, and the file itself remains in the device memory. However, the Android OS defines the area where the “already deleted information” was stored as free.

It turns out that saved files, applications, documents, photos, videos will be written to the freed memory sector. Accordingly, the information contained in this sector will be overwritten.

Therefore, if you want to recover photos on Android or simply delete them, do not record anything else before you restore the data. Saving new data can make the situation worse and significantly reduce the chances of resuscitating the photos.

Recovery programs

All Android applications that recover files require Root rights. If your device is not rooted, use your computer to recover.
