Latest version operating system from Microsoft is literally crammed with various components and services. And if some of them can be considered conditionally useful, then it would be advisable to turn off some of them and not think about them again. And many who want to download and try it in action, note this very desire. Because every action within the operating system, every word entered subsequently turns into advertising. Thus, Microsoft is trying to get maximum benefit from the owners of the conditional free Windows 10.

It’s quite easy to remove everything unnecessary that can track your actions and analyze them. Moreover, this can be done absolutely at any time. Don't worry if you didn't immediately turn off unnecessary components.

During system installation

To use this method, during the installation of Windows 10, you should abandon the default settings and click on the barely visible “Customize Settings” sign. It is located at the very bottom of the existing text.

In this section, you will see all the components that may interfere with your future Windows work 10. To prevent this, you need to disable them all by moving the slider to the appropriate position on the left. In total, you will have to disable two pages of functions.

It is also undesirable to enter your username and password registered on the Microsoft website during the installation process. You can simply skip this step; it does not affect anything. To do this, there is a small inscription at the bottom “Skip this step”.

If you follow these minimum requirements, then the new operating system will practically not indicate any information about the user. It simply will not have special functions for this. Because all the necessary components for this are simply disabled. Therefore, you can use it easily and fearlessly.

If the operating system is already installed

On an existing operating system, disabling all unnecessary components that may interfere with a quiet and anonymous life is not very difficult. You just have to disable only some Windows 10 functions that are particularly annoying. Namely:

  • Windows Defender.
  • Contextual search.
  • Advertising ID.
  • Cloud services.

Each of them has its own way of turning off.

Windows Defender

To get rid of this tool, you need to go to Settings, and then go to the “Update and Security” section. There is a tab called “Windows Defender” in which we need to work. You should disable the functions responsible for sending data and protecting the cloud, as in the screenshot.

By the way, if you don’t want to mess around with the settings, just install any other antivirus. This will turn off Defender automatically.

Contextual Search and Cortana

These two tools are disabled together. Of course, in Russian Windows 10, the latter does not work by default, because Russification was not invented for it. However, it's better to be safe than sorry.

You should click on the search in the bottom line of the desktop, and then click on the lowest icon in the left column, displaying Settings. And there you need to disable both Cortana and Internet Search.

Advertising ID

To disable this functionality, you need to go to the Settings we already know, and from there go to the Privacy section. In the general settings, located at the very top of the left column, you will have to remove the “on” status. for the first three components.

The next tab we need is “Speech, Handwriting and Text Input”. Here you need to prevent Windows 10 from forwarding your speech in order to study the functionality of Cortana. We've already turned it off anyway.

After completing these steps, do not close Confidentiality - it will come in handy later.

Telemetry

To get rid of passing these parameters, you will have to do a little programming. This is done using a built-in tool called PowerShell. To use it, you need to put your PC into console mode using the Windows + X key combination.

A command line will appear in which you need to enter the combinations written in the screenshot.

In short, these commands delete already collected telemetry data, disable the service, and completely disable the ability to record any new data.

After that, open Confidentiality again, and from there go to “Reviews and Diagnostics”. You need to completely disable the generation of reviews (select the appropriate item in the drop-down menu), and then in the “Diagnostics and Usage Data” select the “Basic Information” item.

Clouds

To cloud storage did not work, it is enough not to use your account when working with Windows 10. To do this, you need to find the section in Settings that allows you to manage accounts, and then from there go to the “Your Account” section.

You can refuse to use an entry on the Microsoft website if you log in as local account. To do this, just click on the corresponding inscription and enter the data. This way, you can keep only those components of the 10th generation system that are required.

Windows 10 contains a large number of side features and related system additions called components. Many of them are designed to create corporate networks, servers and other functions that the average user will never need, but will still take up space on the hard drive even when disabled. However, among the components there are also really important ones, the necessity of which many are not aware of. Therefore, before disabling or enabling any component, you need to find out about its significance.

Cautions

Before you start turning off everything that your eye doesn't like, it's worth considering:

  • All potentially unnecessary components are disabled by default and vice versa. Enabling and disabling processes should only be done purposefully if you are sure that you do not need or are interfering with a certain component.
  • The enabled state of the program should be understood as “Allowed for use”. Without the need for a separate component, it will never run.
  • Based on the previous point, processes will never simply load your RAM, and disabling them will not improve the overall performance of the computer.
  • There is no process optimization for games. Windows 10 components can be thought of as a set of tools available to the system that will never be used unnecessarily. The only component used in games is the .NET Framework, which will be automatically enabled when the game starts, even if you have previously disabled it. Moreover, it always updates itself to the required version when installing the game, regardless of the Internet connection (all game installers that use the .NET Framework have an updater for this component, even in pirated versions). When the game is running, all other components will sit still and not work, regardless of their enabled state. Enabling and disabling various components will not affect the operation of the game in any way, and their optimization is an invention of inexperienced users.
  • The only side of the components that can be considered negative is the space they occupy on the hard drive, but their volume is very small, and simply unplugging them will not help to remove them. Complete removal components is a pointless, difficult and sometimes dangerous task.
  • If you install an application on your computer that requires one of the following to function Windows processes, the required component will be automatically connected, but there are exceptions (depending on the application).
  • Some programs are very important to the day-to-day functionality of your system, and it's worth knowing what each one does before you disable it.

Enable or disable programs and features on Windows 10

If you still decide to disable components or want to make sure that you have everything you need enabled, you first need to find them through the control panel.

  1. Open Control Panel. It can be found by searching in the “Start” menu or by right-clicking on the same “Start”.
  2. Open the "Programs" section when categorized.
  3. Click Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Here you can enable or disable all existing processes. A square instead of a checkmark means that only part of the nested components from the group is included (to expand the group, click “+”). Don't forget to click "OK".

Component Values

Various Windows versions 10 have different sets of available components, but we'll look at full list of all possible. We will present the list in the form of two tables: those needed by the average user and specialized processes designed for rarely used and highly targeted computer capabilities (most of them are disabled by default).

Even if some of them seem unnecessary to you, it is better to leave them in place so as not to suddenly encounter an unknown error, since mistakenly shutting down unknown processes will not bring anything good.

Table: components that should not be disabled

Component nameIts meaning
.NET Framework 4.6 (or later)Needed for all applications written in this version of .NET, including all earlier ones, and there are a lot of them. This is the only component used in games. Usually this component is adjacent to its disabled predecessor and completely replaces its absence.
Windows PowerShell 2.0Introduces itself as a new command line shell and adds an impressive list of features. PowerShell takes much longer to launch than the command line and has several other arguable defects. However, its presence on the computer does not exclude the possibility of using the standard version of the command line. Disabling it may prevent you from fixing some rare but very nasty system errors.
Components for working with multimediaThese are standard Windows players. Even if you use alternative apps for movies and music, it is not recommended to disable them. Can be replaced with some plugins and applications.
Print to PDFProvides the ability to print PDF files and adds limited interaction with documents in this format. The narrow list of Print capabilities is unique and is not replaced by alternative browsers.
Support for API remote differential compressionResponsible for synchronizing certain files. Used by some applications and standard Windows tools.
SMB 1.0/CIFS file sharing supportInitially responsible for working with printers when using a network of several computers, but contains some algorithms designed to work with outdated equipment, which is not always related to printing or scanning.
XPS ServicesResponsible for working with XPS documents. This format is quite rare, and most of the functions of this component are found in Print to PDF. But sometimes it is necessary, and disabling it makes no sense.
Document Printing ServicesResponsible for standard program for printing and scanning documents, and also has many related side functions.

Table: components that can be turned off

Component nameIts meaning
.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)Outdated version of the .NET Framework. May be erroneously enabled by some applications. All its functions necessary for the average user are available in the adjacent new version, this option is intended for some developers.
Hyper-VDesigned for creation and use virtual machines. If you don't know what it is, feel free to turn it off.
Internet Explorer 11Backup to Microsft Edge. Even if you don't care about it, it's better to disable it, as it may launch goodbye pages when you uninstall some applications or call up help materials. Once disabled, these requests will be redirected to your default browser.
SNMP protocolUsed for deep configuration of routers old model and similar network equipment. Regular users do not need it at all, and older routers can work without it.
Windows Identity Foundation 3.5Addition for the legacy NET Framework.
Embedded IIS Web EngineIntended for developers. Of course it usually doesn't turn on.
Built-in shell launcherCreates a safe, isolated space to run. The component is difficult to use and is completely unnecessary for ordinary users.
Telnet clientIt slightly expands the capabilities of working with Telenet servers, but contains vulnerabilities and exposes the system to danger.
TFTP clientThe situation is the same as with the Telenet client. Both clients do not contain any functions necessary for the average user.
Work Folder ClientDesigned to work with corporate networks.
Legacy ComponentsMay be used by some legacy applications. If necessary, they turn on automatically, regardless of presets and Internet connection.
RAS Connection Manager Administration PackDesigned to create a VPN connection through standard Windows services. Third party programs to create a VPN, either it is not used or it will be launched automatically.
RIP ListenerDesigned to work with corporate networks and expand highly targeted functions of network equipment that are not needed by ordinary users.
Simple TCPIP Services
Microsot Message Queuing ServerBackup service for sending system reports to Microsoft servers.
Windows Activation ServiceFor developers only, has nothing to do with everything you might think of when you read the title.
Services Active Directory for easier access to catalogsDesigned to work with corporate networks.
Internet Information ServicesDesigned for servers and corporate networks.
MultiPoint ConnectorProgram for implementation remote access. Initially intended for corporate networks. It has more reliable and functional analogues.
XPS ViewerStandard XPS document browser. All the functions it contains are available in Microsoft Office.
Windows TIFF IFilterSlightly speeds up the opening of TIFF files and some related actions.

Errors that appear and their correction

Despite the simplicity of the component system, even here errors can occur. Fortunately, solutions to these problems have long been found and are feasible even for inexperienced users.

Empty Components Window

This problem may occur if the user does not have permission to configure them or one of the applications has changed the registry settings.

Changing user rights

  1. Through a search in the Start menu, find and open “gpedit.msc”.
  2. On the left side of the window, follow the path “User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Control Panel” and click once on the “Programs” folder.
  3. The status of all settings on the right side of the window should be “Not configured”. If so, move on to the next method.
  4. If the status of any setting is different, open it, set the correct status and confirm the change.

Editing the Registry

  1. Search the Start menu and find and open “regedit”.
  2. On the left side of the window, follow the path “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control” and single-click on the “Windows” folder contained there.
  3. On the right side of the window, open the “CSDVersion” option.
  4. Set the parameter to zero and confirm the changes.

Windows components won't install

This can happen due to the operation of old processes, in the place of which new ones are trying to take place. There are 2 ways to solve the problem:

Component storage is corrupted

If the operating system is unstable, accompanied by frequent system errors, the component storage may be damaged, but it is not that difficult to lift when conceived.

  1. Through the Start menu, enter “cmd” in the search and open command line with administrator rights.
  2. Type the command “sfc /scannow” and press Enter.
  3. If they tell you that it is impossible to restore files, try entering the command “DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth” to try to raise the storage through the update center (an Internet connection is required).

If this method does not help you, you will have to completely restore the storage using Windows Powershell.

Full storage recovery

In fact, this is the same as described above, only through Powershell, which has additional permissions. For this method, an Internet connection is required.

Something prevented the installation

This “something” is the limitation on your Internet connection, which you most likely turned on so as not to receive automatic updates Windows.

  1. From the Start menu, go to System Settings.
  2. Open the "Network and Internet" section.
  3. Click "Edit connection properties".
  4. Remove the switch from the metered connection.

Windows 10 components are a fairly important part of the operating system. And even if their significance is invisible to users, thoughtlessly disabling all components is unlikely to lead to anything good. If you are firmly convinced that any of the components is bothering you, you should become more familiar with its purpose and only then disable it. Including unnecessary components will not harm your computer, but will only add several unclaimed functions to your computer.

Windows 10 already does a lot of things, a lot of new functions and all sorts of convenient things, but you can also include some specific tools that are not so popular, which is why they are not included in the standard software set.

You can either add or remove them if you don’t need them. For example, there are a lot of all sorts of add-ons for working with the network, so admins can find useful things, and maybe they will be interesting to you, if you’re good at it, of course =)

By the way, using this window you can actually remove Internet Explorer, just uncheck it and click OK, then a warning will appear that some programs may work with glitches... in general, do not pay attention, if anything, then you can return everything back in the same way (but you must have an installation Windows disk 10 for every fireman, I’ll write about it below). Just guess what.. if you don’t have any other browser, then don’t dare remove Internet Explorer under any circumstances!

Regarding IE, it doesn’t seem to be deleted, but disabled, which is good. If you remove it in the literal sense, then there may be real glitches, because this browser is Part systems. Its “core” (or, more precisely, its object) is used by many programs.

In general, let's get down to business, right-click on the Start icon and select this item there:

A window will appear, click on this item:

In general, a small window will open, the trick is that where there is a checkbox, it means the component is installed, and where it is not, it is not in the system, you can check the box and click OK and it will be installed accordingly.

If you suddenly want to disable some components, then when you turn them back on, you may need to installation disk Windows 10 (if anything, installation files will be taken from there, just like when checking integrity with the command sfc /scannow), this is just a note for you.

Friends, in one of my previous articles we talked about optimizing the operation of the operating system by disabling unnecessary services.

Today we will continue this conversation and add to it. We will talk about disabling Windows components.

When the OS boots, many services and additional components are launched, which, although they work in the background (invisible) mode, load our system, taking away processor and memory resources from other more necessary programs.

All this, of course, affects the performance of the system. There are components that we absolutely do not need; we do not use them. So let's set up the system so that it works efficiently - it takes the resource from those who don't need it and gives it to those who need it.

Disabling Windows 7 Features

  • 1. Go to the menu “ Start” –> select “ Control Panel"–> find the section “ Programs and components”.

  • 2. Click on the item “ Turn Windows features on or off" A list window will open installed components. Here you need to check the box to determine which components we need and which should be disabled.

When you hover over a component, help appears in Russian. When you disable some components, a warning prompt appears, do not pay attention to it.

  1. Internet Explorer (of course, if you use another browser);
  2. Telnet server;
  3. Telnet client;
  4. Tablet PC components (if you use a desktop PC);
  5. Windows gadget platform (if you don't clutter up your Desktop);
  6. Subsystem for Unix applications;
  7. Microsoft Message Queuing Server;
  8. Windows Activation Service;
  9. XPS Service and XPS Viewer (if you don't work with XPS documents);
  10. If you do not use the printer, you can safely disable the corresponding service.
  • 3. Don’t forget to restart your computer at the end of the settings for the changes to take effect.

We have taken another step to optimize and speed up the operating system.
