Major II Bluetooth review - is it worth buying the legendary headphones from Marshall?

Whatever you say, Marshall is one of the the best companies, working in the field of production of musical equipment.

Any device released under this brand is automatically included in the category of the best.

Her headphones sound pretty good and are very stylish look. The main part of the headphones produced by the company are wired devices that are familiar to everyone.

But in this article we will talk about a new model - Marshall MajorII Bluetooth, which are wireless headphones.

Main Features

Headphone type Device with built-in microphone
Mounting type Headband
Acoustic design Closed type
Connection option Wireless (Bluetooth)/Wired
Emitter type Dynamic
Operating frequency range 10 to 20000 Hz
Microphone mounting option Built into the earcup
Type of connector available mini-jack 3.5 millimeters
Battery availability Available
Capacity battery 680 mAh

The headphones are supplied in a cardboard box, which is decorated with an image of the device itself and the name of the manufacturer.

Inside the box are the headphones themselves, paper documentation, a USB cable for charging the device, and a classic twisted audio cable.

Device design

The highlight of these headphones, of course, is that they are not just wireless, but hybrid.

This means that when the battery charge runs out, the user can safely switch to the usual corded version - by connecting the included audio cable to the headphones.

The appearance of the new product is not much different from its existing wired counterparts, and the main difference lies in the presence of additional controls on the body.

It is worth noting that the device is equipped with an inclined bowl mechanism, which has its pros and cons.

The plus is that we have the most comfortable fit of the bowls, but the minus is that this element is quite fragile. If you use it carelessly, you can quickly damage it.

There is a remote control button on the case remote control, thanks to which you can put music file pause and then start it again.

Using this button you can also switch to an incoming phone call. Agree that this is quite a useful and convenient feature.

Thanks to the movements of the joystick button in different directions, you can adjust the sound, as well as switch from one music track to another.

However, this function is only available when working with Apple and Samsung devices.

If you connect an audio cable to the headphones, this will happen. automatic shutdown Bluetooth module.

If you again want to transfer them to wireless mode- press the button located near the 3.5 mm Jack connector twice. In this case, the indicator located next to the power button will light up blue.

Whatever you say, the headphones are of a decent size, so you won’t be able to carry them in your pocket.

The device uses ecological leather, which covers the headband and earcups with speakers.

Most existing headphones have speakers covered with fabric, but in these headphones the fabric is replaced with a coarsely woven mesh.

The back of each cup features the company logo imprinted on vinyl overlays. Due to the fact that the “Marshall” inscription itself has a convex shape, everything looks quite stylish.

The disadvantage of all over-ear headphones is that in the summer the ears become quite hot. In this regard, the headphones of the Major line are no exception, even though they do not completely cover the user’s ears.

Thanks to the wide and soft headband, there is no pressure on the head, and the mechanisms allow you to adjust the headphones to your parameters.

Despite the fact that there is a joystick button in the lower bowl of the headphones, there will be no accidental pressing when removing them from the head.

This is due to the fact that the joystick has a fairly heavy stroke, which makes it immune to this kind of pressing.

Battery and autonomy of headphones

These headphones are equipped with a battery with a capacity of 680 mAh.

As the developer himself states, its full charge will be enough for 28-30 hours of continuous use.

This figure can be considered a record among similar devices.

In the event that the battery runs out and there is no electrical outlet at hand, you can use the existing audio cable.

In any case, you can enjoy your favorite music compositions for an unlimited time.

Description

MARSHALL MAJOR II is a new model of closed-back portable headphones from the famous amplifier manufacturer. In the name of the model, the company used the name of its “Major” line of guitar amplifiers, which were produced from 1967 to ’74.

The model is intended primarily for those who listen to music from portable devices. It can be used as regular headphones, or you can use it as a headset. The headphones are equipped with a microphone that allows you to take a call or make a voice recording.

The MARSHALL MAJOR II connection is wired, one-sided, but the cable of this model has interesting features. Firstly, the cable is partially straight, and in the middle there is a twisted section, which prevents the cable from tangling, and also allows, if necessary, to increase its length by stretching the rings. Secondly, the cable is completely detachable, and you can connect it from either the left or right side. On the straight part of the cable, closer to the headphones, there is a remote control with which you can control playback, as well as answer calls or end a conversation.

The sound of the headphones is perfectly balanced, thick and rich, with a pleasant velvety tint for which Marshall is famous. And here is the main difference between Major II and its predecessor model. The specially designed new drivers deliver deeper, tighter bass, with more emphasis and clarity in the highs and crisp mids. At the same time, the headphones convey sound very naturally and reliably.

The MARSHALL MAJOR II features a retro design that closely resembles the look of the headphones during the Major amplifier era and is distinctly reminiscent of Marshall amplifiers. The shape of the ear cups is square, but with slightly more rounded corners compared to the previous Major model. On the outside of the ear pads there is a recognizable vinyl logo, familiar to everyone who has ever seen Marshall amplifiers. The walls of the ear pads have an abrasion-resistant vinyl coating and a relief structure similar to the texture of the leather covering of the headband. Jim Marshall's autograph is stamped on the inside of the headband.

The highest quality and reliable materials were used in the design, especially for parts of the headphones that are constantly exposed to mechanical stress. The golden plug of the wire is equipped with a spring shock absorber, which is quite unusual for headphones. The plug is four-pin, and for devices that do not support this standard, a convenient L-shaped adapter is provided.

The headphones are very light, and also perfectly adapt to the shape of the head and do not cause fatigue not only when listening to music for a long time, but also when worn around the neck when they are not in use. However, they conveniently fold into a compact design that is easy to store and carry. The cups fold inside the headband, with the metal parts of the frame protruding slightly outward and used to wrap the wire around them, which allows the headband to be further compressed. The wire is especially resistant to bending, so such storage will not harm it at all. Thus, when folded, the headphones take up very little space.

The task was to buy light and comfortable on-ear headphones for the summer. I already have two pairs of good sounding headphones, but they are not as comfortable to wear. Therefore, the selection criterion was a combination of small size, convenience, acceptable sound and affordable price. Reading reviews and opinions on the Internet did not help with the choice, so I decided to go to the store, listen to what was available, and, if I liked it, buy it. At first I wanted to listen to the Sony MDR-ZX660AP, but they were out of stock, I think I listened to the Sony MDR-XB550AP (I could be wrong, they cost 2.5 thousand rubles). I didn’t like the sound at all - dull, dark. The seller suggested Marshall Major II, which I initially didn’t even consider because some reviews write about the inconvenience of wearing. But they immediately captivated me. Lightweight, comfortable, and very pleasant, detailed, balanced, at the same time rich and dynamic sound. I admit, I immediately fell in love with them. I also listened to the AKG Y50, although I was already almost sure that I would take the Marshall. Indeed, I liked the AKG less in terms of sound and convenience. After the purchase, while walking, I listened to Marshall for about forty minutes, then, after a break for business, for another hour or so. There is no inconvenience from wearing, the ears get a little warm, but this effect cannot be compared with full-size ones. They seemed very light, comfortable, no discomfort when wearing, the sound out of the box was as good as that of the demo sample, I listened to different recordings, and was no less pleased than with the initial listening. I would also like to note the good sound insulation - on a busy street you can clearly hear all the nuances of the recording; there is almost no muffling of frequencies by external sounds. Of course, soundproofing helps less in the subway, but the subway is the subway. I would like to point out one point for understanding. These are certainly not perfect headphones. These are headphones that are good in their price range. You can buy much better-sounding headphones, but in a different form factor, or better-sounding on-ear headphones, but at a different price. However, maybe you will like Sony, AKG, or some others more, you need to try everything on and listen. These suited my needs.

Marshall Major headphones are a fairly popular model; many chose them because of their attractive design, sound and price. The updated version has received some changes and, alas, now costs much more...

Design, construction

Please immediately, if you already have a Marshall Major, write in the comments how satisfied you are with these headphones and whether you are going to change to a second model. Well, now let's get down to business. A few years ago, Marshall Major headphones appeared on the market, a fairly compact on-ear model for use with smartphones and other portable equipment. The new product stood out with its interesting design, replicating the company’s “adult” technology, the headphones were comfortable to wear, and the price played a role; for more than three thousand rubles, the user received a good gadget in a beautiful package. Some of our editors went and go with Marshall Major, many of my friends bought headphones at random, on a whim, and were satisfied. I would like to remind everyone that tables and graphs are all great, but the emotion in the store matters more when making the final decision. A person comes for one thing, sees something else and completely changes his mind. Many of my colleagues complain on Facebook or social networks, they say, a person comes, asks questions about technology, asks for help, you help, and then bam, and this person, a faithful reader, bought something completely different. Time wasted, words were written, to no avail. I seem to have convinced you, but here Her Majesty EMOTIONAL PURCHASE comes into play. And at least there’s a stake on your head.

The second version of the popular model is available in three colors: in addition to black, there is white and brown.

They look beautiful, but keep in mind that this is eco-leather and in life everything will be a little different than in the pictures. That is, the smell is not like leather, and the feeling is not like leather. On the inside of the headband is the company name, the cups are small, the wire goes into the plastic parts on the headband. The fastening of the earcups allows you to fold the headphones, and then the Major can be put away in your jacket pocket.

One of the features of the new product is a removable audio cable; on the box it is written how to use the remote control. Instructions on the packaging are a new trend, and an important one, there are no extra pieces of paper, and that’s good. The button on the remote control allows you to fully control playback and rewind tracks. Well, the removable cable is good because it can always be replaced. Notice how well it is made, there is a spring so that the braid bends less, and a corrugated frame. It's beautifully made, and the headphones don't feel like an inexpensive model at all. The markings of the left and right cups are on the inside of the headband, the cable connecting the cups is visible, it can be accidentally pulled, and this is not very good.

On the front of the cups there are the usual vinyl inserts with the company logo, around there is velvety plastic (prints are not particularly visible), the shape of the cups itself is unusual, it is a square instead of a circle or oval. The headphones fit well, but due to the shape, the front part of the cup seems to be pressed a little tighter. The flat and wide headband fits well on the head; people with any head size can wear the headphones thanks to the large offset of the guides (let me remind you, here it is a thick wire).

The speakers are covered by the “wicker” familiar from the first model; it has not changed at all. By the way, here is a review of the first Majors; this model is still on sale in some places.

Wearing headphones around your neck is problematic; you have to pull out the cups all the way so they don’t choke you, and then adjust them to wear them on your head again.

Music

The site even has a schedule, here, especially for those who lack schedules. Glad to help you.

The headphones use 40mm drivers, and here are other specifications.

  • Impedance: 85Ω
  • Sensitivity: 96db
  • Max Input Power: 50mW

There is no adapter for a regular jack included, apparently, use with serious equipment is not intended. And in the first model it was. It probably became clear that people buy Major to listen to on iPhone and Galaxy, so there’s no need to invent anything.

Noise isolation has become better; if you turn up the volume on the iPhone 6 Plus to three quarters, ambient sounds disappear, although the noise of cars outside the window is still slightly audible in pauses. In general, compared to the first model, sound insulation has not become much better.

The sound quality has also changed little. There is no need to expect miracles here, no matter what they say about specially made speakers, but this is a model for 99 euros or 99 dollars in the USA, our price is about 7,000 rubles - with the change in exchange rate, the once budget model literally flew into space.

There is a difference in sound; the second generation model sounds better. Now the model copes better with complex tracks, although you can still find fault with the detailing. There is no emphasis on low or high, the middle disappears a little. When several instruments or effects come into play at once, Major IIs are lost. The vocals are good, with natural notes conveyed - but the more complex the track, the easier it will be for your headphones to present it to you. The model is quite universal for any music, and can be recommended to those who are primarily looking for an unusual design and are not too concerned about sound quality.

The most listened to since Marshall Major II was the new album by The Chemical Brothers, called Born in the Echoes, available for purchase on iTunes. A friend says that it’s not the same anymore, the old people are baked together. But! Of course, there are no things like this here.

Or like this.

Or even like this. Everyone remembers Block Rockin Beats. Surely many of you still play this track in the car, during training or in other circumstances. The cult composition appeared in 1997.

Well, I can also remember Hold Tight London, a not so famous track, but loved by many.

Probably not a single track from the new album will become so famous.

The members of The Chemical Brothers are great, if only because they continue to do what they love. And the album turned out to be a fighting one. There are things that are a little strange, like Taste of Honey, but there is also I`ll see you there - it would be quite suitable as a soundtrack for “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” or Snatch (here, by the way, Major II gives up in some places and do not pull out).

Conclusions

Headphones now cost about 7,000 rubles, for this money the choice of models is very, very large, and there are devices much more interesting than Marshall, both in design and sound. Let me remind you about Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear, the price is about 6,500 rubles, there is also Harman/Kardon Solo and Harman/Kardon CL, Bose SoundTrue On or Over-Ear - and this is far from the end.

It seems to me that the Major supplier should have explained the difficult situation on the market to the manufacturing company. Now the price of 7,100 rubles for Major II is simply inadequate; there are models from more well-known companies with better sound. What can the updated Major offer? Detachable cable? It seems to me that this is not serious. The headphones are not worth the money.

But if you come across the first model for 4,000 - 4,500 rubles, you can safely take it.

The bottom line is that it’s an interesting model from a design point of view with good sound. If you like these particular headphones, you can buy them. Just listen and twirl it in your hands first.
