In the first half of November 2018, something that many had been waiting for a long time happened. The public was presented with Xiaomi Mi AirDots wireless headphones, which have an extremely attractive design and a special case designed not only for storing and transporting them, but also for charging, including in the absence of power sources nearby. Chinese engineers managed to outdo themselves, because the personal music listening device they created turned out to be one of the best on the market.

Each of the Xiaomi Mi AirDots headphones contains a 40 mAh battery inside, which allows it to work on a single charge for as long as 4 hours at above-average volume. The headphones themselves have a “plug” design, that is, they perfectly cut out external noise and do not fall out of the ears, which is especially important for people who play sports. Inside the case into which the headphones are inserted there is a 350 mAh battery, which increases the total autonomy to 12 hours (three times).

To connect to a smartphone, the Bluetooth 5.0 protocol is used, which is backward compatible with all predecessors. The case is recharged from the cable USB Type-C, and this is a very big plus. If necessary, the user can change the ear pads to any others to achieve a perfect fit in the ear. Do not forget that the perception of all sounds and, of course, music directly depends on how well the headphones fit in your ears.

Xiaomi Mi AirDots wireless headphones have a built-in microphone, making them suitable for communicating with someone, for example, while driving. Tracker switching and volume adjustment are controlled using special touch panels on the sides of the headphones. Now, for a limited period of time, you can get this gadget completely free of charge, and you only need to spend a few minutes on it.

The publication site is giving away these headphones completely free of charge. To receive them you need to subscribe to social network"VKontakte", then subscribe to the newsletter in Google service News and to the newsletter within the Russian social network. Also, of course, you need to repost the competition entry and fill out a special form for participation, in which you need to indicate the address of your page on the social network. The winners will be determined using a special form.

Since two pairs of wireless headphones are participating in the Xiaomi Mi AirDots drawing, the chances of winning double. The results will be summed up as part of video evidence, and this will happen on the evening of December 30, 2018, that is, shortly before the New Year. This is a great chance to get an extremely cool gadget from a famous brand without any payment, because even delivery is at our expense.

Nowadays, drop headphones are fashionable without any wires at all – just earplugs. Despite all the convenience of this new product, it is worth noting that sound purity in this case is quite difficult to achieve. Only Xiaomi has the know-how to make mini headphones transmit normal bass thanks to a movable speaker and a complex composite membrane. It is worth noting that Xiaomi has been working on solving the problem of high-quality sound transmission in miniature headphones for many years.

Let's compare the most popular models - Apple Airpods - in fact, the founder of the fashion for wireless earbuds, Huawei Freebuds, Meizu Pop and Xiaomi Airdots.

Testing Apple Airpods

Let's start with Apple Airpods. It was these headphones that gave rise to a wave of imitations, more or less successful.

The case is comfortable, the shape is good, the magnetic lid and the holding of the headphones are quite good. It’s pleasant to hold in your hands, the indicators glow and look for brotherly devices. The charging cable outlet is convenient. You can even connect Apple phones without accessing iCloud by pressing a special button on the case. In this case, the indicator will glow white.

Electronics, of course, pleases. There is a Siri call, a good microphone, and a sensor that determines whether the earphone is in place or not.

The headphones stay in the ear quite well without any earbuds, although the long and thick stem of the headphone, in which all the filling is located, weighs a little. That is, the earphone has a tendency to fall out in advance. It’s good if at home or in the office, but what if in transport? You'll have to crawl under the passengers' feet and look for the tiny earphone before it gets crushed. As I understand it, I'm not the only one with this problem. The long and heavy leg, which also has to stick out at an angle, is the weak point of the Apple Airpods.

When you connect Apple Airpods to any Android device, a weak but constantly audible background noise appears, as if the headphones are quietly boiling with rage. Background noise is also present when connecting to original devices, but is more or less suppressed.

In general, the headphones are not very suitable for listening to good music - the frequencies are simply cut on the original device or hiss when connected to other equipment.

The price of Apple Airpods is from 18 to 11 thousand rubles. Frankly a little expensive for generally average headphones, albeit from a famous company. Innovation is great, but headphones are needed for good sound transmission - this is their main purpose.

Let's evaluate the new Meizu Pop

Meizu Pop is a relatively inexpensive solution in this format. The good news is that there are several ear tips and even a special protective ear bud from the rain. But in the opinion of the reviewer, they sit uncomfortable in the ear, despite the earbuds. The charging case is designed in the format of a container for eye lenses. What struck me the most was the exit of the charging cable of the case from the bottom. An ill-conceived decision, very inconvenient. Although wireless charging will save you.

Sound transmission is sufficient for work-related conversations. I don't want to listen to music in this quality of sound transmission. By Meizu price Pop can be bought in the range of 8-6 thousand taking into account sales.

Huawei Freebuds - innovation or failure?

The shape of the headphones is comfortable, the case is of an excellent economical format, there are earbuds, they fit perfectly in the ear. It becomes unclear why these headphones failed in sales. Sellers at the Huawei store complained about a high percentage of returns.

The problem turned out to be noise reduction. The headphones were obviously made very quickly to catch the wave and the noise suppression was not done properly.

Huawei Freebuds are excellent at transmitting environmental sounds. But not the interlocutor. Unlike the models listed above, Huawei Freebuds are not even suitable for work and negotiations.

The price of Huawei Freebuds is about 6-7 thousand.

Xiaomi Airdots

These headphones are the latest to appear, although Xiaomi can boast of research and hundreds of patents in the field of miniature devices for high-quality sound transmission. All these floating coils, complex membranes, experiments with increasing the speaker coil. However, Xiaomi Airdots have already appeared literally at random. Need I say that the engineers took into account all the mistakes of their predecessors?

The charging case is exceptionally convenient, the most convenient of all, including the leader and founder of the race.

Xiaomi Airdots support Bluetooth standard 5.0, which automatically takes them beyond the boundaries and ensures perfect audio transmission from any device. Then the sound is picked up by branded speakers and voila - we get perfect sound without any distortion at all. You can talk, you can listen, you can even turn on serious music and get a normal result.

Xiaomi Airdots do not have a hanging leg and there is hope that they will not get caught and get lost. We have to admit that it was not in vain that Xiaomi took a wait-and-see approach and created a real miracle.

The price of Xiaomi Airdots is about 5 thousand rubles. The headphones are available for pre-order and are selling out instantly.

IN company store Mishka-Shop, you can buy headphones with delivery to VREGION_WHERE.

Open for connection

Put back to charge

The headset box is also charging, the headset will turn on and pair with the device

Let's start the review by saying that we want to tell you about the next wireless headphones. But these are not just headphones, they are Xiaomi creations. And as we know, Xiaomi manages to produce inexpensive and pleasant things. Will Xiaomi AirDots prove this rule? Let's unpack the box and listen to how they play music.

The headphones were shown almost at the very end of 2018. And it’s even strange that Xiaomi waited so long to respond to the most hyped headphones of recent years. I'm talking about Apple AirPods, if anyone hasn't figured it out yet.

Equipment

The headphones are packaged in a simple white cardboard box, where in addition to the AirDots themselves you will also find a charging case, a micro-USB cable and replacement ear tips. The set is extremely simple, separate charger no, just a short cord, but this is no longer a big problem, as I think.

What’s much sadder is that Xiaomi chose a hopelessly outdated standard. For example, Meizu POP is equipped with a more practical USB Type-C. I have no doubt that Xiaomi fans will go berserk at these words and say that I got to the bottom of it from scratch: the connector format does not affect the sound and comfort of the headphones. I won’t argue, it’s just strange, especially since many new Xiaomi smartphones this year we received Type-C. And in general, if you look at the market, Type-C is finally becoming a standard.

I'll put it on and listen

The headphones are quite large, not small, but not very healthy either. In size they are comparable to the same Meizu POP, but I liked the Meizu headphones better in shape. They are somehow more elegant, perhaps, more interesting looking. The design of Xiaomi AirDots did not evoke any emotions for me, regular headphones, but some people didn’t like them at all, especially girls. First of all, the sizes are confusing - they are noticeable in the ear and look so-so. But this is completely subjective, I think. When you listen to music, the design of the headphones is the tenth thing, much more important is how they sit in the ear and how they feel.

Xiaomi AirDots are good with all this: they are light, almost weightless, fit tightly and do not fall out when you actively twist and turn your head or just run along the path.

Control

The controls are simple: you can pause it either by touching the headphone body, or switch tracks and change the volume on the screen of your phone, or whatever you connected the AirDots to.

The gestures are simple: one touch pauses, two touches go to a new track, three touches go back a step. Also in standby mode, double tapping launches the voice assistant, and you can also answer calls by touching the headphones. Or cancel incoming call two clicks. However, you won’t be able to change the volume if you don’t have a phone in your hands. It’s the same with switching tracks, it’s inconvenient.

Music

AirDots can’t pause music when you take the earphone out of your ear; these aren’t AirPods. Therefore, you have to touch the earphone with your finger to pause playback. Alternatively, you can control it from your phone, because pointing your finger into the earphone is not always convenient. For example, when you just want to adjust the earphone, you can accidentally touch the case and pause the song.

I didn’t particularly like the sound, because I’m used to my Sony SBH90C, which play much more interestingly. But they also cost significantly more, about three to four times.

Therefore, if you come down to earth and imagine yourself as an AirDots buyer, it’s difficult to find fault with the sound quality. In reality, these are very inexpensive headphones, and it’s difficult to find something with better audio for that kind of money. I would even say it is impossible. But if you know specific examples, share your knowledge, we’ll get such headphones and tell you about them.

Xiaomi AirDots have a large volume reserve, they play neutrally: if the composition has a lot of bass, you will feel it. And if it’s not there, then you’ll have to add lows with an equalizer. The headphones are loud, they play “hoarsely”, I want to make the sound clearer, but here it is “muffled”. In general, it’s difficult to criticize headphones for this kind of money. If they cost 100–150 dollars, one could find fault with the sound, but these are very cheap and sound normal.

Connection

To connect headphones you need to do the following. You put the headphones in the case, then take them out of it, start searching for a new Bluetooth device on your phone, find AirDots and connect. In principle, the procedure is not much different from the process of searching for any other headphones. But these are not AirPods, which connect easier and faster, as if by waving a magic wand. Here the headphones are connected to each other, you get such a pair, and then it establishes a connection with the phone. But AirPods work differently: each earphone communicates independently.

AirDots keep a good connection, although there are periodic glitches: when you listen to music, switch to the next track, and the headphones start stuttering out of the blue. Then you can simply switch to the next song.

If you watch videos on YouTube, there is also desynchronization of sound, a periodic phenomenon for Bluetooth headphones. How to overcome it? You can try resetting the headphones, but this doesn’t always help, so it’s easier to get used to it and not pay attention to it.

Opening hours

The charging case is small in size and surprisingly lightweight. If together with AirPods we get a small but weighty object, and this automatically gives the feeling of a solid, high-quality thing, then with Xiaomi the situation is different. It's simple and inexpensive plastic, the lid opens and closes without a pleasant click, and there's a minimum of attention to detail. Moreover, in the case of the already mentioned Meizu POP, the situation is different, because the headphones of the main competitor come with a better-quality case.

The case has a built-in battery with a capacity of 350 mAh - this is enough for three full recharges of the headphones with a reserve. Each earphone contains a tiny 40 mAh battery. AirDots work for about 3–3.5 hours if you listen to music at 70% of maximum volume. I won’t say that it’s a lot, by the standards of wireless headphones of this format this is the usual result, but 5 or 6 hours of work is already the ceiling for small devices.

Charging the case takes almost two hours, surprisingly long for a battery of such a small capacity. The headphones themselves charge in about 40 minutes, fast enough to keep you connected to music throughout the day.

How much do Xiaomi AirDots cost?

The headphones themselves are quite cheap - at the time of announcement Xiaomi price AirDots were $30. At the same time, it is extremely difficult to buy them for this money now, at the end of 2018.

In Moscow, headphones are resold for 4.5–5 thousand rubles, the little thing is in high demand and, as usual, sells out with a bang.

What else?

There are a lot of wireless headphones on sale, but there are very few inexpensive wireless ones, the choice is very meager. This is why Xiaomi AirDots are flying apart. Elari NanoPods, Meizu POP - these are a couple of the main competitors. If we go further, Samsung Gear IconX is already looming on the horizon, but this is a completely different price order.

Headphones will be very, very popular. Everyone already knows about Xiaomi, the brand is not surprising, on the contrary, people are specifically looking for accessories and products from Xiaomi. Another thing is that talking about some kind of confrontation with Apple and calling AirDots “killers” of AirPods is a stupid thing to do. You can catch the hype, but if Apple offers a high-tech headset with bells and whistles, then Xiaomi offers just inexpensive wireless headphones. And this, you know, is also good.
