Mail services change settings from time to time mail servers, so first go to the website postal service and in the setup help, look at what the mail server settings should be for sending and receiving messages. For example, for Rambler

In Thunderbird, for my mailbox on Rambler, the outgoing message server mail.rambler.ru is registered, but it should be smtp.rambler.ru. In settings mailbox It is impossible to select smtp.rambler.ru, since it is not in the drop-down list and you cannot enter it manually.
To add a server to the list, do the following.
Click on the name of the mailbox and in the new window, in the Accounts section, click View settings for this account.

In the Account Settings window on the left side, find Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and click on it.

In the new window, click the Add button.

In the SMTP server window, in the Description field, enter an arbitrary name, in the Server name field I entered smtp.rambler.ru, in the Connection protection field I selected SSL/TLS. The port is assigned automatically. In the Authentication Method field, I left a regular password. If you have an email address [email protected], then enter ivan in the Username field.

Click Ok. Now the added server will appear in the list of outgoing mail servers. All that remains is to specify the added server in the account settings and sending letters should work.

The setup on a Linux system is described. Thunderbird is a cross-platform program, so the setup on Windows should not be very different from what is described.

If you cannot send messages, this page provides a series of steps you can use to check for common problems. If you have problems receiving messages, see Cannot receive messages.

Table of Contents

Verify your SMTP outgoing email settings

  • If there is no article with your specific mail provider"s mail settings, then look for an SMTP mail settings article on the mail provider"s site. This is usually in the support section of their website; searching for "mail settings" or "SMTP" will usually find it. Check that your Thunderbird settings match the documented settings.

Verify the correct SMTP Server is being used

Verify that your outgoing email is not being blocked

Verify that your outgoing email is not being blocked by your firewall, antivirus software or your Internet Service Provider:

  • Try briefly turning both antivirus and firewall software off, sending a test email and turning them on and sending another test email.
  • Many ISPs block outgoing email on port 25. You may have to switch to another port (e.g. 587 or 465). Contact your ISP"s support to see if they are blocking your outgoing email port.

Note: Firewall or antivirus software blocking outgoing email is a common cause of not being able to send messages after updating Thunderbird, since it may be set to trust the previous version of Thunderbird and no longer recognize the updated version as trusted. Remove Thunderbird from your program"s list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back manually or when prompted to resolve this.

Delete SMTP Password

Try deleting your SMTP password. However, don"t do this as a first step, especially if you cannot send messages after updating Thunderbird while you previously could. In such case, usually there is nothing wrong with a stored SMTP password in Thunderbird (see above).

Reset SMTP Password

Try changing your SMTP password. This is usually done via a "reset email password" form on your ISP"s support website.

If this list doesn't help

Please with a screenshot of your SMTP settings with your user id obscured and include the following information: your mail provider (for example, Gmail), ISP (for example, Comcast), firewall version (if any), antivirus software and version (if any), operating system and version (for example Windows 7 or Mac OS X Mavericks), and Thunderbird version (for example Thunderbird 38.2.0). See the How do I create a screenshot of my problem? article for information on how to create a screenshot.

Mozilla Thunderbird users sometimes encounter problems that don't always have obvious solutions. Mozilla Thunderbird errors occur due to a number of factors that are not always caused by user actions. In this manual we will look at the most famous of them.

Mozilla Thunderbird does not send messages

If you encounter an error sending a Mozilla Thunderbird message, you should first check your SMTP settings for outgoing correspondence. Select the account that is not working, right-click on it and select “Options” - “Outgoing Mail Server”. Make sure that the server settings listed at the bottom of the panel match the settings of the provider providing the service.

You can find out the current server settings on the website https://support.mozilla.org/ru/ in the corresponding section.

If there is no information there, it can be found on the official website of the mail provider - usually in the user support section.

Make sure the correct SMTP server is used. Click on the main menu button, then select “Settings” - “Account Settings”.

It is important to remember that the services of one provider do not send correspondence to another - for example, the Yandex SMTP server does not work with Gmail and vice versa.

Check your firewall, firewall or antivirus software settings - they may prevent Mozilla Thunderbird from accessing the Internet. Disable all protection for a short time and try sending a test email.

Check to see if Mozilla Thunderbird is not working due to blocking on the part of your Internet provider. It is known that many providers block port 25 for security reasons, so you have to use others. Information about blocking can be obtained from the provider’s technical support.

If the above methods do not help, try removing the SMTP password and changing it to another one. Don't forget to set the same password in your mailbox settings.

Messages do not arrive in Mozilla Thunderbird

When Mozilla Thunderbird errors occur while receiving correspondence, you should do all of the above. Generally, these methods work in most cases. However, if the problem cannot be resolved, it is recommended to take the following steps:

  • Check the availability and functionality of the Internet connection - the problem may be on the provider’s side;
  • If the provider's web interface email works correctly, the problems are due to incorrect Mozilla settings Thunderbird;
  • Make sure that your email provider account password has not been changed by you or others;
  • If Mozilla Thunderbird has recently been updated, access may be blocked by your antivirus or firewall.

If you do not receive all your correspondence, and important letters get lost somewhere along the way, check the antispam filter settings of your email provider. It is possible that email services simply do not allow such messages to pass through because they contain links or attachments of a certain format. Also, check your antispam settings in Mozilla Thunderbird itself, especially if you created your own additional filters or blocked some respondents.

Links in messages don't work

Unlike some similar programs, Mozilla Thunderbird inserts clickable links when creating messages that you can follow. When you insert a link, it will be styled accordingly (that is, highlighted and underlined), but when you click on it, nothing will happen. When you type a link in the body of an email, it appears as plain, unformatted text. This decision was made by the Mozilla Thunderbird developers specifically because of the features of editing links. They are activated only after sending a message or saving it in drafts.

Go to “Start” - “Control Panel” - “Default Programs”.

Click the “Set default programs” button.

Check the list to see which browser is used by default (and whether it is used at all).

If this method does not help, you should check if Mozilla Thunderbird is causing this error installed plugins. To do this you need to run mail client V safe mode(restart and hold Shift when starting the application). In the window that appears, check the “Disable all add-ons” checkbox.

If links open in safe mode but not in normal mode, Mozilla Thunderbird is not working correctly due to one of the add-ons. It remains to determine why exactly. To do this, you can disable them one by one in the add-ons control panel, checking the functionality of the links.
